Coronation Street boss teases turbulent future for Peter and Carla as his exit looms

EXCLUSIVE: Coronation Street’s Peter Barlow has been struggling to cope after he murdered serial killer Stephen Reid, with his relationship with Carla Connor beginning to suffer.

At the end of the year, Chris Gascoyne’s character Peter Barlow from Coronation Street, along with his romance with Allison King’s Carla Connor, are scheduled to conclude.

Recently, producer Iain MacLeod discussed Peter’s leaving and said that the pair will be going through a difficult few weeks.

“We wanted to try and play the reality of a man who has got his demons,” he said to Express.co.uk and other publications.

“The struggle within himself to make sense of himself, which will emotionally throw him on the ropes.

“We were concerned about the message underlying his drinking, therefore we felt it was crucial that, as a transplant recipient, he never took a drink again.

“It will begin to affect his street happiness and start to alert Carla to the fact that he is really, really not okay, and they end up at this massive crossroads.”

“They love each other, but maybe they start to wonder if they would be better somewhere else or in a different circumstance now that their happiness isn’t dependent on each other.

“Everything builds to this incredibly unexpected Christmas Day episode, and then there’s a big two-hander that features the two of them for the most part.

“It is a greatest hits compilation for the fans of the couple, which picks over who they are and what they are as a couple, what they want for their future and what happiness looks like for them.”

Iain also explained they wanted the couple to go through a high-tail, nuanced and realistic ending to their relationship.

Whilst many fans will be devastated about their split, Carla won’t have long to grieve as her Nephew Bobby Donovan (Jack Carroll)

Jack stated of his arrival at the show: “I’m honoured and thrilled to be contributing to the legacy of Coronation Street, a cultural icon.

“I hope Bobby brings viewers a lot of laughs in the vein of some of the street’s classic comedy characters” .
