This Privacy Policy explains how The News One (“we”, “our”, “us”) collects, uses, and protects your personal data when you visit the website thenewsone.co.uk or use the The News One mobile application (collectively, the “Service”). We are committed to protecting your privacy in accordance with the UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and other applicable data protection laws.

1. Information We Collect

a) Information you provide to us

  • Account information: When you create an account or sign in, we collect your name, email address, phone number (if used for sign-in), and profile picture.
  • Content you submit: Comments, likes, bookmarks, saved articles, and any feedback or messages you send us.
  • Purchase information: If you subscribe to Premium, payments are processed by Google Play or the Apple App Store. We do not collect or store your card or payment details.

b) Information we collect automatically

  • Device and usage data: Device type, operating system, app version, IP address, browser type, pages visited, and how you use the Service.
  • Push notification tokens: When you enable notifications, we receive a device token from Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) used to send you notifications.
  • Reading history and preferences: Articles you read and settings you choose. This data is stored locally on your device by default.
  • Crash and error reports: Diagnostic information to help us fix issues and improve reliability (via Sentry).

c) Information from third parties

  • Sign-in providers: If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive the account information you authorise that provider to share with us (such as your name and email address).

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Provide, maintain, and improve the Service;
  • Process Premium subscriptions and manage your account;
  • Send push notifications about new episodes and articles (you can disable these at any time);
  • Personalise content, including AI-powered summaries;
  • Display advertisements, which may be personalised where you have consented;
  • Respond to your enquiries and complaints;
  • Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and security incidents;
  • Comply with our legal obligations.

3. Legal Bases for Processing (UK GDPR)

We process personal data on the following lawful bases:

  • Performance of a contract: to provide the Service you have requested, including Premium features;
  • Consent: for personalised ads, push notifications, and optional cookies. You may withdraw consent at any time;
  • Legitimate interests: for security, fraud prevention, and service improvement;
  • Legal obligation: where required by law.

4. Advertising

We use Google AdMob to display advertisements. AdMob may collect device identifiers and usage data to serve ads. Where required, we request your consent before showing personalised ads, and you can adjust your ad personalisation preference at any time in the app’s Settings. You may also opt out of personalised advertising in your device settings.

5. Cookies

Our website uses cookies to improve your experience:

  • Essential cookies: required for the website to function, such as login and security cookies.
  • Preference cookies: remember your settings, such as your name and email when you leave a comment.
  • Analytics and advertising cookies: help us understand usage and serve relevant ads.

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Blocking essential cookies may prevent parts of the website from working properly.

6. Embedded Content and Third-Party Services

Articles may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images) from other websites. Embedded content behaves in the same way as if you had visited the third-party website, and those providers may collect data about you in accordance with their own privacy policies. The Service also relies on third-party processors, including:

  • Google Firebase (authentication, analytics, push notifications);
  • Google AdMob (advertising);
  • Sentry (crash and error reporting);
  • Google Gemini (AI-powered content summaries).

7. Data Retention

We retain your data only as long as necessary for the purposes described in this Policy:

  • Account data is kept while your account is active;
  • Comments and related metadata are retained for moderation purposes;
  • Purchase records are retained as required for tax and accounting purposes;
  • Local data (bookmarks, history, saved articles) is stored on your device and can be cleared by you at any time.

8. Data Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data against unauthorised access, loss, or alteration. Data transmitted between the app and our servers is encrypted using TLS. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. International Transfers

Your data may be processed outside the UK by our service providers (for example, Google’s servers in the United States). Where we transfer data outside the UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the UK’s adequacy regulations or Standard Contractual Clauses.

10. Your Rights

Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:

  • Access a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
  • Rectify inaccurate or incomplete data;
  • Request erasure of your personal data;
  • Restrict or object to processing in certain circumstances;
  • Data portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format;
  • Withdraw consent at any time, where processing is based on consent;
  • Lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at [email protected]. We will respond within one month of receiving your request.

11. Children’s Privacy

The Service is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above and, for significant changes, make reasonable efforts to notify you in the app or on the website. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
