Coronation Street spoilers: Why Yasmeen Nazir is defending Geoff Metcalfe?

Coronation Street Spoilers: Yasmeen Nazir has been defending her abuser, Geoff Metcalfe, even though her friends and family remain worried about her well-being. There is, though, a more heartbreaking reason why she is doing so.

Coronation Street’s Yasmeen (played by Shelley King) has been at the center of a harrowing coercive control storyline on Coronation Street over the past year, with Geoff’s partner (Ian Bartholomew) emotionally and mentally abusing her. While the plot started subtly, in recent months, the villain has revealed his true colors not only to his wife but also to his fellow Weatherfield neighbours. With his behavior under the spotlight, his other half felt the need to support his partner. There is, though, a very sad explanation of why the ITV soap pensioner has been trying to hide the mysterious activity of her house. Going to cast her mind back all the way back to when Yasmeen first arrived at the cobbles in 2014, she was the matriarch of a strong new family set to play in Weatherfield.

Accompanied by her ex-husband Sharif Nazir (Marc Anwar), the pensioner seemed to have built up a perfect family before it was discovered that her other half had been having an affair with her buddy Sonia Rahman (Sudha Bhuchar) for seven years. What with the death of her son Kal Nazir (Jimi Mistry) and her marriage breaking down, the pensioner became a shell of her former self, but she saw hope when Geoff showed her some kindness. Having loved and lost in the past, and being manipulated by her husband to bend to his whim, the long-suffering character appears to protect the villain as she blames herself. Holding on to the idea that Geoff loved her deep down, Yasmeen was brainwashed to believe that her husband can only be violent when she messed up. The pensioner has done nothing wrong and is falling under the spell of a villain, but her past has often confused her state of mind.

Seeing this warped vision of herself and not wanting to lose another partner, that is a reason for why she’s so intent on not letting her family and friends know what’s going on.
Chantal Hughes, CEO of the Domestic abuse Charity, The Hampton Trust, offered further clarification in an exclusive interview.

Asked if Yasmeen was only living with her abuser out of fear of what he might do, the director of the charity said: “Yasmeen has become captive in a world that Geoff has built for her, and it is becoming increasingly difficult for her to reason or to view things objectively. “She’s been lost and stuck. She’s going to move from feeling scared of what Geoff is going to do to defend her actions and blame herself. “Living in this flux of uncertainty and fear is exhausting and will reduce her ability to think clearly and behave.” With such turmoil spiraling through her mind, it seems that the pensioner’s warped beliefs have only been compounded by how Geoff responds once he has gone too far.
Every time the villain feared that his wife would leave him because of his evil deeds, he pled with her to give him a second chance. It is a very common trait of someone guilty of domestic abuse, leaving Yasmeen to believe like she has done something wrong. Chantal added: “The abuser may also show depression or attempt to commit suicide if the survivor considers leaving.

“If you love someone, you want to believe it will be different, and these are some of the many reasons that trap women in abusive relationships.” “Yasmeen may have times where she understands that Geoff is being mistreated, but because she loves him, she may not want to accept this is happening, so she will defend her actions and blame herself for some of it.” Seeds were planted when Geoff arrived in Weatherfield in 2018 and incorporated very slowly into his wife’s life. The end of the storyline has yet to be confirmed, but the soap has increased awareness of the often-overlooked dimension of abusive relationships.
