Tammin Sursok reveals what it was like to film Neighbours at the time of its shock axing after 37 years on air

Tammin Sursok just concluded filming on Neighbours for a brief time.

And, in an appearance on The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Monday, the actress opened up about the atmosphere on set, with her contract ending on the same day as the long-running soap’s cancellation after 37 years on the air.

During such a difficult ‘transition,’ the 38-year-old applauded the cast for their professionalism and for not ‘throwing a hissy fit.’

‘I admire Australian work ethic… they came in with such professionalism and did their job without moaning or throwing a hissy fit,’ Tammin told co-hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson.

‘They were just so professional,’ she continued, ‘and it was just really lovely to be on that show during such a shift.’

Neighbours was discontinued earlier this month, with the final episode taped in June, according to Network 10 and Fremantle, the show’s producer.

‘It is with sadness that we are confirming that Neighbours will cease production in the summer, after over 37 years and nearly 9000 episodes broadcast,’ they said in a statement to MailOnline at the time.

‘We presently have no choice but to put the show on hold following the loss of a key broadcast partner in the UK, despite our efforts to find other funding.’

‘Since the news broke, everyone at Neighbours has been touched by the outpouring of love and support from the audience.’ The show has brought a sunny piece of Australia into the homes of millions of people all over the world, as well as launching the careers of dozens of household celebrities.

‘However, as this chapter of Ramsay Street draws to a close, we pledge to do everything in our power to give the show the send-off it so richly deserves.’

After a ‘extensive hunt for alternative funding’ failed, the show would be taken off the air indefinitely.

The show’s abrupt exit from Channel 5 in the United Kingdom drove it into a tailspin, with Australian network executives scrambling to find a new overseas broadcasting arrangement to fund production costs or risk permanently shutting down Ramsay Street.

In a statement to Australian media earlier this month, Network 10 said that ending the series was a “tough decision.”

‘This tough choice was made after an unsuccessful search for an alternate UK broadcast partner.’

They went on to say that the show would ‘not air on 10 Peach after September 2022,’ thereby ending its decades-long run.

‘It has been a cornerstone of Australian television drama and Australian cultural exports for almost 35 years,’ they noted.

‘Ramsay Street, Erinsborough, is a world-famous cul-de-sac that has housed Scott and Charlene, Des and Daphne, Dr Karl and Susan, Dee and Toadie, Aaron and David, and a slew of other residents.

‘Network 10 thanks the cast, crew, production team, and Fremantle for bringing the ideal blend of soap and sunshine to audiences in Australia and throughout the world,’ said the network.

‘The Australian fans and audiences for their continued support of the series,’ they added.

‘Their support has been wonderful, especially in the last several weeks.’ It just goes to prove that our audience still wants Australian written drama,’ the statement concluded.

‘We listened to them, and there are some interesting new local projects in the works, which is fantastic for our audience and the local economy.’

‘We are confident that the actors, crew, and writers will bring their unique warmth, flair, and humour to the Neighbours set when they begin filming the final episodes in the coming months,’ said the network.

Meanwhile, Channel 5 announced in February that its 14-year relationship with Neighbours was coming to an end, with a spokeswoman telling MailOnline that the decision was made because the channel’s “present focus is on growing our investment in original UK drama.”

‘We understand that this decision will cause sadness, but our present focus is on boosting our investment in original UK drama, which has a great appeal for our viewers,’ they stated.
