Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith) made it clear that he wanted no one to know that he had lost his job in EastEnders, but little did he know that Mitch Baker (Roger Griffiths) was doing some investigative work and thus found out the reality, and so — assuming that Chantelle (Jessica Plummer) was the one who told her father — carried out his most vicious assault yet. Karen (Lorraine Stanley) knows full how much Mitch hates Gray, she made her ex invite her son-in-law round for a meal, but the lawyer — determined to keep up appearances— declined his request, saying he had plenty of work to do at the office.
However, Mitch eventually learned from Jack (Scott Maslen) that Gray had been seen in a hotel in the afternoon, and therefore he jumped to the conclusion that the lawyer had been cheating on his wife. Mitch did some research and came to learn that Gray had lost his job— something that made him feel bad about putting together two and two and getting the wrong answer. He apologized to Gray but admitted that he knew about his predicament in doing so.
Gray fumed, thinking that Chantelle was the one who told her father, and thus he wasted no time in carrying out a brutal attack on his wife— leaving her fearful for her life.
Afterward, he set out for some fresh air, but Karen successfully convinced him to come to the pub, and after doing so, he came to learn that everyone in the pub was celebrating his kindness and that he was a hero of what he was doing for Whitney (Shona McGarty).
While in The Vic, the lawyer also learned that Mitch had called his office — a revelation that made him realize that after all, Chantelle had not revealed his secret. Meanwhile, back in the house, a beaten and wounded Chantelle broke down, unable to stand after the heinous attack.
